What is Fruit Wine?

You might be thinking “Isn’t all wine technically fruit wine?” Yes, grapes are fruit, so shouldn’t all wines be called fruit wines? Although, in the world of wine, when an individual refers to fruit wines, what they mean is any wine that is not made from grapes.

Generally, fruit wine is made from fermented fruit juice. Floral wine, like elderflower wine, are part of the fruit wine family. You can buy alcoholic and non-alcoholic fruit wines on the market. The alcohol levels are pretty identical to your traditional grape wine, around 10-15% ABV.

What does Fruit Wine Taste Like?

Fruit wines are similar to white wines, which means they are best served chilled between 45°F -50°F as this is the perfect temperature to bring out the delicious fruity flavours you are looking for.

However, there are lots of types of fruit wine out there so it’s hard to determine whether all fruit wines taste the same. Some are sweet and fruity just like fruit juice, but others are tangy and more subtle.

The fruit wine flavours are determined by the fruit that is used, the length of the fermentation process, and the methods used for the wine to be produced. To maximise the flavour and create a perfectly balanced fruit wine, you would need to balance the sugar levels with the acidity. Too much sugar and the wine will become too sweet, not enough sugar it will become sour, which ultimately makes it undrinkable.
